What’s the MOST IMPORTANT APPOINTMENT you have for this year?

As winter is ending (and we look forward to a new spring), it is well to stop and see what we have scheduled on our calendar.

Do we have all of our appointments listed for our important check-ups?

Let’s see – doctors, eyes, dental, and a complete physical. Now, what else? Oh yes! The car needs to be checked. It has been a little hard to start lately. Appointments are scheduled obligations we don’t want to forget. They are reminders of important matters that affect us and our families — whether it’s a vacation or the myriad of other activities that fill up a calendar year.

  But wait!   There’s one essential and very important appointment we must not forget to include… And that’s an appointment for a “spiritual” check up.

The apostle Paul gives us a reminder of this in I Corinthians 11:28. He emphasizes the need to examine ourselves, especially with the Passover coming in April. To be ready for the Passover we need to be working on a “spiritual” examination now. Paul repeats his admonition for self-examination in 2 Corinthians 13:5…

“Examine yourself as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know your own selves, that Jesus Christ is in you? Unless indeed you are disqualified.”

Each of us knows that self-examination can be a little uncomfortable. But the wisdom of doing so helps us learn what we need to do in this life to be spiritually alive and well. So, what are we looking for? Paul gives us some virtues to consider. Philippians, chapter four and verse 8, says:

“Finally brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.”

Don’t forget! While you are getting together your schedule for the coming year, be sure to make the most important appointment you can have – an appointment for self-examination. Don’t put it off.
