Lessons from the Days of Unleavened Bread
Share
The Days of Unleavened Bread are a seven-day period that immediately follows the Passover celebration in the Hebrew calendar. During this time, Jews and many Christians observe the commandment to remove all leavened products from their homes and consume only unleavened bread. Here are some of the scriptural lessons that can be drawn from this observance:
The Importance of Obedience: One of the main lessons of the Days of Unleavened Bread is the importance of obeying God’s commandments. The removal of leaven is a symbolic act of purging sin from our lives, and this can only be done through a deliberate and conscious effort to follow God’s instructions.
The Necessity of Holiness: Another lesson of the Days of Unleavened Bread is the importance of holiness. Leaven is often used in the Bible as a symbol of sin, and the removal of leaven from our homes and diets is a reminder that we are called to be holy, as God is holy.
The Power of Redemption: The Days of Unleavened Bread also teach us about the power of redemption. The Passover commemorates the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt, and the Days of Unleavened Bread represent the time when they were finally free to live as God’s people. This reminds us that God has the power to redeem us from our own slavery to sin and set us free to live in obedience to Him.
The Importance of Remembering: Finally, the Days of Unleavened Bread teach us the importance of remembering God’s actions on our behalf. The Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread are annual reminders of God’s faithfulness and the great things He has done for us. We are called to remember these events and to pass them on to future generations, so that they too may learn from them and be inspired by them.
The Need for Humility: The removal of leaven also teaches us the importance of humility. Leaven represents pride and self-importance, and removing it from our lives is a reminder to be humble and to recognize our need for God’s help in all areas of our lives.
Focus on Jesus: Each of God’s Holy days point to the important roles Jesus has in our history and our Salvation. Jesus overcame sin and He is our example and Saviour as we seek to overcome sin.
Sin Is Sneaky: In our diligent effort to remove sin from our lives it is a helpful lesson to find a whole bun (hiding under a couch cushion) in the middle of the Unleavened bread week! Even when we focus upon sin in our lives – we are human, and we miss things … but Jesus is our Passover Lamb that makes up for our slip-ups when we repent of our sins & He redeems us to God.
In 2023, the days of Unleavened Bread run from Sunset on April 5th until sunset on April 12th. God gives us these annual Holy Days to rehearse & remember important things that (as humans) we can forget without the annual reminder. Is sin present in your life? Now is a great time to confront it and “change” — Stop sinning! In prayer, Jesus is there to help.
